Automatic IP Camera Setup

Unicam leverages the ONVIF protocol to streamline the process of adding IP cameras and NVRs to your monitoring system, making it a hassle-free experience.

Note: Unicam's automatic discovery finds cameras on your local network. To access IP cameras remotely from outside your network, use the Unicam Hub desktop application.

Understanding ONVIF Protocol

ONVIF (Open Network Video Interface Forum) is an open industry standard that promotes interoperability between IP-based security products, regardless of the manufacturer. This standard enables the Unicam app to automatically detect and integrate compatible devices within your local network.

Steps for Automatic Camera Setup

  1. Compatibility Check: Ensure your cameras or NVRs are ONVIF-compatible. Some devices may require enabling the ONVIF protocol explicitly via their web interface. Consult the manufacturer's documentation for guidance.
  2. Initiating the Scan: In the Unicam app, tap the plus (+) button to add a new device. Navigate to 'Find Device' to commence scanning your local network.
  3. Adding Devices: When the app discovers devices on your network, they will be listed for you to select. Add them by entering the username and password for authentication.
  4. Service Integration: Upon successful addition, the Unicam app pulls supported services from the devices, completing the setup.

Ensuring a Smooth Setup

  • Network Consistency: Confirm that both your device (phone or tablet with Unicam app) and the cameras/NVRs are connected to the same local network.
  • Authentication Credentials: Keep the username and password for your cameras or NVRs handy, as these are essential for the authentication process.

Troubleshooting and Alternatives

  • Enabling ONVIF: If you encounter issues with device detection, ensure that the ONVIF protocol is enabled on the camera or NVR.
  • Manual Setup: For instances where automatic discovery fails or for cameras that do not support ONVIF, Unicam offers a manual setup option. This involves entering the IP address and port of the camera directly into the app.
